Cataracts, a leading cause of blindness worldwide, affect millions of people despite being one of the most treatable eye conditions. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this disparity is primarily due to a global shortage of trained ophthalmologists, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

To combat this crisis, Orbis International and FundamentalVR have developed a cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) training simulator that is transforming cataract surgery training for medical students. This innovative tool creates a safe and immersive training environment, featuring:

  • Virtual reality technology for realistic surgical simulations.
  • Haptic feedback, enabling trainees to feel the texture and resistance of human tissue.
  • Cloud-based assessment tools, offering real-time performance analysis.
  • Low-cost gaming hardware, making it accessible and scalable globally.

The program is already operational in hospitals across Ethiopia, Bangladesh, India, China, and Mongolia, where it is empowering future eye surgeons and bridging the gap in ophthalmic care.

This VR-based initiative is a game-changer for global healthcare, offering a sustainable solution to train more ophthalmologists and reduce preventable blindness worldwide.
