Apple CEO Tim Cook praised DeepSeek’s AI models for their ability to drive efficiency during an earnings call, addressing questions about Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy.

Apple’s AI Strategy and DeepSeek’s Impact

Cook emphasized Apple’s hybrid AI model, which balances on-device processing with cloud-based AI solutions through partnerships. Apple currently collaborates with OpenAI, allowing ChatGPT to assist iPhone users via a secure cloud environment.

While Apple’s AI ecosystem remains exclusive to OpenAI for now, Cook hinted at potential integrations with other AI providers, including Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude. However, he stopped short of suggesting a direct partnership with DeepSeek.

Controversy Surrounding DeepSeek

Despite Cook’s positive remarks, DeepSeek faces allegations from OpenAI, which claims the Chinese AI firm improperly used its models for training through distillation—a potential violation of OpenAI’s policies. Additionally, industry experts question DeepSeek’s claims about the efficiency of its model training, speculating that it required significantly more computing power than advertised.

Apple’s AI Developments and Challenges

Cook also fielded investor concerns regarding the slow rollout of Apple Intelligence. While the company saw increased engagement in regions where AI features were launched, iPhone sales declined slightly last quarter. Further complicating matters, Apple recently suspended its AI-generated news summaries after inaccurate headlines misrepresented major news stories.

As Apple continues refining its AI offerings, the tech giant’s approach to partnerships and innovation will shape its position in the competitive AI landscape.
