Meta Expands Engineering Presence in India Amid Layoffs

Meta made headlines last month for announcing plans to cut 5% of its employees, controversially deeming them “low performers.” However, the company is simultaneously expanding its presence in India’s tech hub, Bengaluru (formerly known as Bangalore), according to multiple Meta employees on LinkedIn.

Meta’s Career Page currently lists 41 open positions in Bengaluru, most of which were posted in the last month. The openings are primarily for software and machine learning engineers, along with roles focused on designing chips for Meta’s data centers.

One of Meta’s job ads, posted three weeks ago on LinkedIn, is seeking an “experienced Engineering Director to build and lead our engineering team in India.” The director will be responsible for hiring and establishing a strong engineering foundation, along with crafting a vision for Meta’s teams in the country.

The new center is part of Meta’s Enterprise Engineering team, which focuses on custom internal tools rather than consumer-facing products like Facebook and Instagram. Despite Meta already having offices in multiple Indian cities—including Hyderabad, Gurgaon, New Delhi, and Mumbai—Bengaluru appears to be the focal point for engineering expansion.

A Meta spokesperson in India confirmed to TechCrunch that they are hiring for a “small number of engineering positions in Bengaluru.” The company emphasized that it regularly updates location strategies to align with long-term investments.

This shift comes at a time when Meta is also making changes globally. For example, Meta’s AI investments continue to grow as the company focuses on new technological advancements.

With over 1,700 global job postings, the Bengaluru expansion remains a small fraction of Meta’s overall hiring but signals the company’s evolving approach to leveraging India’s talent pool for engineering and innovation.
