AI startup Anthropic has raised a massive $3.5 billion in its Series E funding round, pushing its post-money valuation to $61.5 billion. The round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Jane Street, Menlo Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures. This latest funding brings Anthropic’s total capital raised to $18.2 billion, according to Crunchbase.

Expansion and AI Development

Anthropic stated in a blog post that this investment will be used to advance next-generation AI systems, expand compute capacity, deepen research into AI interpretability and alignment, and accelerate global expansion. The company aims to develop AI systems that function as true collaborators, capable of tackling complex projects and synthesizing information across fields.

The funding announcement follows the launch of Anthropic’s latest AI model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet. This “hybrid reasoning” model enhances response accuracy by analyzing queries more thoroughly. The company is also working on simplifying user interaction with AI by moving away from complex model selection processes.

Financial Growth and Challenges

Anthropic’s revenue has been on an upward trajectory, with its annual revenue run rate reportedly reaching $1 billion last year. In 2025, the company has already seen a 30% increase in revenue, primarily through its AI API services and Claude chatbot subscriptions. However, Anthropic is also burning cash rapidly, expecting to spend $3 billion this year on AI development and infrastructure.

Strategic Partnerships and Market Positioning

In an effort to drive profitability, Anthropic has introduced new tools and subscription tiers, including AI-powered “agents,” a desktop client, and mobile applications. The company has expanded to Europe and brought in high-profile hires such as Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger, OpenAI co-founder Durk Kingma, and former OpenAI safety researcher Jan Leike.

Anthropic has also strengthened its partnership with Amazon, a major investor and collaborator. In November, Amazon invested an additional $4 billion into the company, with plans to optimize its Trainium AI chips for Anthropic’s AI workloads. Additionally, Anthropic is collaborating with Amazon to enhance Alexa+ with its AI models.

Founding and Competitive Edge

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by CEO Dario Amodei, who previously served as VP of research at OpenAI. Amodei left OpenAI due to disagreements over the company’s roadmap and brought along several former OpenAI employees, including policy lead Jack Clark.

Positioning itself as a safety-first AI company, Anthropic aims to differentiate from OpenAI by focusing on AI alignment and security. With substantial funding and a rapidly growing market presence, the company is set to play a significant role in the AI landscape.
