South Korean chipmaker FuriosaAI has reportedly declined an $800 million acquisition offer from Meta, choosing instead to continue developing and producing its AI chips, according to a local media report.
The negotiations between the two companies reportedly fell apart due to disagreements over post-acquisition business strategy and organizational structure, rather than pricing concerns.
Meta, like other major tech companies working on large language models (LLMs) for AI applications, has been seeking to reduce its reliance on Nvidia for specialized AI chips. The tech giant has been developing its own custom AI chips and, in January, announced plans to invest up to $65 billion this year to bolster its AI initiatives.
FuriosaAI did not respond to a request for comment. Meta also did not immediately respond to inquiries outside of regular business hours.
FuriosaAI’s Growth and Fundraising Efforts
Despite rejecting the Meta offer, FuriosaAI is reportedly in discussions with investors to raise approximately $48 million (KRW 70 billion), with plans to finalize the funding round by the end of the month.
Founded in 2017 by June Paik, a former Samsung Electronics and AMD executive, FuriosaAI has developed two AI chips—Warboy and Renegade (RNGD)—to compete with industry leaders such as Nvidia and AMD.
The company has completed testing of its RNGD chips in collaboration with LG AI Research and Aramco. Reports indicate that LG AI Research (source) plans to integrate RNGD chips into its AI infrastructure, with FuriosaAI set to launch the chips later this year.
