Google’s AI Mode Goes Mainstream in the US — Making Search Smarter and More Helpful

Google is rolling out its new AI Mode for search to everyone in the U.S. this week, promising a smarter, more conversational way to find information online. Announced at Google I/O 2025, this feature lets you ask complex, multi-part questions and follow up naturally — a big step beyond traditional search.

Building on last year’s AI Overviews, which gave AI-generated summaries atop search results, AI Mode aims to be more interactive and accurate. While AI Overviews racked up over 1.5 billion users monthly, it wasn’t always perfect — remember that bizarre pizza glue suggestion? Google is aware and working to improve.

One standout addition is Deep Search. Instead of answering with a quick snippet, Deep Search breaks down your question into many smaller queries, pulling info from multiple sources. The result? A detailed, fully cited report you can trust — perfect for things like comparison shopping or digging into research topics. If you’ve ever spent hours hunting for product reviews, this feature could save you loads of time.

Another cool tool rolling out with AI Mode is a virtual “try it on” for clothes. Upload your photo, and the AI will generate an image of you wearing the item, factoring in fabric stretch and 3D shapes. This is just the beginning of Google’s push to blend AI with shopping, including a future tool that can buy things for you when prices drop — though you’ll still have to hit “buy for me” yourself.

Google’s AI is powered by an updated Gemini 2.5 model, and its capabilities will slowly enhance the original AI Overviews experience. Soon, AI Mode will handle complex data queries, like comparing sports stats across seasons or visualizing financial info on the fly.

Google is also expanding its AI assistant Project Mariner, which can help you book restaurants or find event tickets by checking multiple sites and picking the best deals. And coming this summer is Search Live — a feature that lets you talk to AI about what your phone camera sees in real time, much like an upgrade to Google Lens.

Finally, expect search results to get more personal if you choose to connect your Google apps, like Gmail. For example, Google could spot your upcoming travel plans from your inbox and suggest things to do in that city while you’re there — though you’ll always have control over what you share.
