OpenAI just took a major step forward in the AI arms race with the launch of its new ChatGPT agent—a powerful digital assistant capable of doing more than just answering questions. Now, it can take action on your behalf: automating online tasks, creating detailed PowerPoint presentations, drafting spreadsheets, booking restaurant reservations, conducting competitive research, and even summarizing calendar events.
Unlike previous versions, the new ChatGPT agent combines the functionality of OpenAI’s earlier “Operator” bot with the company’s deep research capabilities. The result? Entering Microsoft’s Territory?
This feature rollout puts OpenAI squarely in direct competition with Microsoft’s own AI tools embedded in Excel and PowerPoint. While OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil denies it’s meant to rival Microsoft, it’s hard to ignore the overlap—especially with OpenAI’s tools not supporting Google Sheets or Slides.
Despite their partnership, tension between OpenAI and Microsoft has been rising, and this move may further complicate that relationship. Still, OpenAI insists the focus is on utility: “People communicate using spreadsheets and presentations—it’s just how work gets done.”
The Bigger Picture
OpenAI’s announcement reflects the industry-wide sprint toward AI agents that can do real work, not just answer questions. From Salesforce to Workday, companies are introducing bots that summarize reports, analyze data, and communicate with customers.
