Arriving just in time for Pokémon Day on February 27, this release allows longtime fans to recapture the nostalgic feel of the classic Game Boy Advance era, while newcomers can experience where the global phenomenon all began.

Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming digital release, including new features, pricing, and important purchasing details.

Experience the Definitive Kanto Journey

Originally released in Japan in 1996 as Pokémon Red and Green (and remade for the GBA in 2004), these timeless RPGs defined a generation. In these Switch ports, players can once again encounter the original 151 Pokémon alongside iconic characters like Brock, Misty, Professor Oak, and the villainous Giovanni.

The games retain all the groundbreaking updates introduced during the Game Boy Advance era, including:

  • Pokémon Abilities and Natures
  • Dynamic weather conditions in battle
  • The ability for Pokémon to hold items
  • The option to select your player character’s gender

What is New on the Switch?

While the classic pixel art and legendary turn-based gameplay remain untouched, Nintendo has updated the hardware functionality.

  • No More Link Cables: Nintendo Switch players can now trade and battle with friends via local co-op without needing a cumbersome Game Link Cable! (Note: Additional games and systems are required for multiplayer mode).
  • Cross-Generation Play: The games are fully playable on both the current Nintendo Switch and the newly released Nintendo Switch 2 systems.

Pricing and Important Language Details ⚠️

Both Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen will be available digitally on the My Nintendo Store and Nintendo eShop starting February 27 for a suggested retail price of $19.99 (USD) each. Select retailers will also offer digital download cards during launch week.

Crucial Purchasing Warning: Because Nintendo is faithfully replicating the way the games were originally released in 2004, each language version is sold separately. There are no in-game options to toggle or change the language menu once you boot up the game. You must purchase the specific version you want to play:

  • English Version
  • French Version (EU French)
  • Spanish Version (EU Spanish)

Please double-check your shopping cart to verify the language of the game before completing your purchase!
