Apple’s longtime Chief Operating Officer, Jeff Williams, is preparing to step down later this month, the company announced Tuesday. His departure marks the end of a nearly 30-year career that helped shape some of Apple’s most iconic products.

Williams is retiring to focus on spending more time with his loved ones. “I look forward to spending more time with friends and family, including five grandchildren and counting,” he shared in a statement.

Sabih Khan, currently Apple’s Senior Vice President of Operations, will take over as the new COO.

Although Williams plans to retire before the end of the year, he will continue to report to CEO Tim Cook in the meantime. He’ll also keep overseeing the Apple Watch and the design teams for now. Once he formally retires, Apple’s design group will transition to reporting directly to Cook.

Williams has been instrumental in Apple’s rise over the past three decades. He helped lead the development of the iPod, the iPhone, and later the Apple Watch. In recent years, he also took on management of the company’s design efforts, continuing Apple’s tradition of blending technology with distinctive style.

His departure marks another major leadership change for Apple as the company evolves in a new era of devices and services.
