Elon Musk Rules Out Interest in Acquiring TikTok, Calls It “Not a Priority”

Elon Musk recently clarified that he has no interest in acquiring TikTok, despite speculation linking him to a potential deal for the popular social media platform. During an interview at the WELT Economic Summit on January 28, Musk dismissed rumors, stating he is “not chomping at the bit to acquire TikTok.” A video of the interview was published today, offering further insight into his stance.

The remarks come amid developments surrounding TikTok’s future in the United States. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump delayed legislation that would require TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance , to sell the app or face a ban in the U.S. Reports suggested that the Chinese government might be open to a deal involving Musk, a key ally of Trump, taking over the platform. Trump even expressed his preference for either Musk or Oracle chairman Larry Ellison to acquire TikTok, signing an executive order to establish a sovereign wealth fund that could purchase a stake in the app.

However, Musk firmly denied any intentions of pursuing TikTok. “I have not put in a bid for TikTok,” he said during the interview. He elaborated, “I don’t have any plans for what I would do if I had TikTok. I guess I would look at the algorithm and try to decide: How helpful or useful is this algorithm? And what can we do to shift the algorithm to be more productive and ultimately beneficial to humanity?”

Musk also admitted that he doesn’t “use TikTok personally” and isn’t “that familiar with it.” Reflecting on his acquisition of Twitter (now rebranded as X ), he described the move as an anomaly in his career. “I usually build companies from scratch,” he noted, emphasizing that buying existing platforms isn’t typically part of his strategy.

Focus on Government Efficiency

Musk’s comments on TikTok came nearly 20 minutes into the interview, which initially centered on his plans for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump administration. Since taking charge, Musk and his allies have gained control of several federal agencies and access to large amounts of sensitive data.

“With respect to government, really the challenge is overcoming bureaucracy,” Musk explained. “I think bureaucracy is perhaps the penultimate boss battle. The ultimate boss battle is defeating entropy … The second hardest battle is defeating bureaucracy. That’s how difficult it is to improve government.”
