Elon Musk’s DOGE Plans IRS Hackathon to Build Unified API for Taxpayer Data

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is reportedly organizing a hackathon next week with the ambitious goal of creating a “mega API” to streamline and centralize access to sensitive IRS data, according to a report by Wired.

The event is being spearheaded by two DOGE-affiliated staffers embedded within the Internal Revenue Service — Gavin Kliger and Sam Corcos, the latter of whom is also the CEO of healthtech company Levels. According to the Wired report, Corcos has described his vision as creating “one API to rule them all.”

The envisioned API would allow cloud service providers and third-party platforms to easily access a wide range of taxpayer data — including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, tax returns, and employment history — potentially exporting this information to external systems.

While the aim may be streamlining government data handling, critics are raising red flags. A source inside the IRS reportedly told Wired:

The project is said to involve external contractors, with Palantir Technologies — a data analytics firm with deep government ties — frequently mentioned as a likely candidate to manage parts of the initiative. Palantir has previously worked with agencies like the Department of Defense and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on sensitive data operations.

This isn’t the first time Elon Musk has stirred debate over data transparency and privacy. His previous initiatives — from X’s open-sourcing of algorithms to calls for AI regulation — have drawn both praise and skepticism. Now, critics are worried that this hackathon could lead to significant privacy risks if proper safeguards aren’t implemented.

Whether DOGE’s “mega API” becomes a revolutionary step in federal data efficiency or a potential data privacy disaster remains to be seen.
