EV Rivals Target Tesla’s Decline with Bold Trade-In Bonuses and Discounts

Tesla is facing an unprecedented spike in trade-ins across the U.S., driven by a combination of political backlash, public vandalism, and brand fatigue. As discontent with Elon Musk’s actions grows, competing automakers are rushing to capitalize on the shift in consumer sentiment.

Lucid Motors, Volvo, and Ford have rolled out “conquest bonuses” — incentives designed to pull customers away from rival brands, especially Tesla. Polestar’s $5,000 incentive has already shown strong results. The company’s head of sales, Jordan Hofmann, shared on LinkedIn that the Polestar 3 saw some of its best sales days following the announcement.

Interestingly, most of these discounts don’t require actually handing in a Tesla. According to an analyst at Edmunds, the offers tap into a trend where EV owners are eager to leave Tesla behind — regardless of financial loss.

Tesla’s image has taken a hit after Elon Musk’s political alignment with Donald Trump and controversial actions involving cryptocurrency DOGE. This has fueled a movement called Tesla Takedown, leading to rising instances of vandalism and even arson, drawing a strong response from President Trump.

Yoon explains that automakers are aware many Tesla owners were planning to ditch their vehicles anyway:

“These guys are going to trade in their Teslas… so why not offer a sweeter deal and win them over before someone else does?”

Sean Tucker, lead editor at Kelley Blue Book, added that Tesla’s plummeting brand perception has distorted the resale market:

“It’s hard to fix a resale price for Tesla now… public opinion is shifting too fast.”

While Tesla still benefits from domestic production advantages amid new tariffs, the wave of strategic marketing by rivals — especially startups like Polestar and Lucid — could begin to chip away at the brand’s dominance in the EV sector.

As tariffs and trade policies evolve, so too might buyer preferences — and Tesla’s once-loyal customer base may prove to be a goldmine for its competition.
