Meta Spotted Testing AI-Generated Comments on Instagram

Meta is testing AI-generated comments on Instagram as part of its broader push to integrate artificial intelligence into its social media platforms. This follows previous AI-related experiments, such as AI-generated characters with unique profiles and personalities, which were eventually discontinued.

AI-Generated Comments on Instagram

Jonah Manzano, a social media feature researcher, discovered a new “Write with Meta AI” prompt on Instagram. This feature provides AI-generated comment suggestions based on the content of a post.

Users with access to the test will see a pencil icon next to the comment bar. By selecting this option, Meta AI analyzes the image and generates three suggested comments.

For example, if an image features a person smiling with a thumbs-up in their living room, Meta AI may suggest:

  • “Nice living room setup.”
  • “Great ambiance in this photo.”
  • “Looks like a perfect place to relax.”

Meta’s Response and Strategic Direction

A Meta spokesperson confirmed the test in a statement to TechCrunch:

“We regularly test more features for you to use Meta AI across our apps. Outside of DMs, you will find Meta AI in areas like comments, feed, groups, and search to enhance your experience.”

Meta did not specify when or if the feature will be widely rolled out. However, the company previously tested AI-generated comment summaries on Facebook, suggesting a continued effort to integrate AI-driven interactions into its platforms.

Potential User Concerns

The introduction of AI-generated comments may raise concerns among users who value authentic engagement over automated responses. Many Instagram users have expressed a preference for genuine, personal interactions, and some may perceive AI-generated comments as artificial or impersonal.

While AI-driven features can improve convenience, they may also contribute to a less organic social media experience. Given Instagram’s history and user expectations, the reception of this feature will likely depend on how seamlessly it integrates into everyday interactions.

Future Implications

Meta’s experimentation with AI-powered features suggests a broader shift toward automating engagement across its platforms. If successful, AI-generated comments could be expanded to other Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp. However, whether this aligns with user preferences remains to be seen.
