Nintendo to Launch Virtual Game Cards for Cross-Device Portability Ahead of Switch 2 Release

Nintendo announced on Thursday that it is developing Virtual Game Cards, a new feature designed to enhance the portability of digitally downloaded games across different devices. With the much-anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2, these Virtual Game Cards will help users seamlessly transfer their existing Switch games to their new devices.

Currently, Switch games can be purchased either as physical game cards—similar to traditional video game cartridges—or as digital downloads. While physical game cards can easily be ejected and inserted into another Switch console for continued play, digital downloads have proven more challenging to transfer across devices.has been a common demand among gamers for years.

Expected to launch in late April, Virtual Game Cards aim to make digital games as portable as physical ones. Once connected locally for the first time, players will be able to transfer their games between devices with ease.

In addition to this, Virtual Game Cards will allow users to lend games to others within their Nintendo Family Group (which supports up to eight members) via local Wi-Fi. Each game can be lent to one person at a time, and after a 14-day borrowing period, the game will automatically return to the lender. Nintendo Family Groups allow for easy sharing and game lending among players.
