OpenAI just took a major step forward in the AI arms race with the launch of its new ChatGPT agent—a powerful digital assistant capable of doing more than just answering questions. Now, it can take action on your behalf: automating online tasks, creating detailed PowerPoint presentations, drafting spreadsheets, booking restaurant reservations, conducting competitive research, and even summarizing calendar events.
Unlike previous versions, the new ChatGPT agent combines the functionality of OpenAI’s earlier “Operator” bot with the company’s deep research capabilities. The result? A browser-powered, internet-savvy AI that can click, scroll, type, gather information, and synthesize it just like a human—only much faster.
Who Gets Access?

The ChatGPT agent is now available to Pro, Plus, and Team users as of Thursday, with Enterprise and Education access rolling out later this summer.
What Can It Do?
Here are a few tasks the ChatGPT agent can already handle:
- Create Excel-style spreadsheets and PowerPoint decks from scratch.
- Perform first- and second-year level financial analysis.
- Scan your calendar and brief you on upcoming meetings, with related context pulled from the web.
- Compare competitors and generate presentation-ready reports.
- Help with online shopping, research, and much more.
According to Neel Ajjarapu, product manager for ChatGPT agent, this tool can significantly cut down time spent on tedious tasks: “Work that might’ve taken someone a full night can now be done in 30 minutes.”
Entering Microsoft’s Territory?
This feature rollout puts OpenAI squarely in direct competition with Microsoft’s own AI tools embedded in Excel and PowerPoint. While OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil denies it’s meant to rival Microsoft, it’s hard to ignore the overlap—especially with OpenAI’s tools not supporting Google Sheets or Slides.
Despite their partnership, tension between OpenAI and Microsoft has been rising, and this move may further complicate that relationship. Still, OpenAI insists the focus is on utility: “People communicate using spreadsheets and presentations—it’s just how work gets done.”
The Bigger Picture
OpenAI’s announcement reflects the industry-wide sprint toward AI agents that can do real work, not just answer questions. From Salesforce to Workday, companies are introducing bots that summarize reports, analyze data, and communicate with customers.
But the promise of AI agents has yet to fully materialize—many still require integration with other services to be truly impactful. OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent, however, is an important leap in that direction.
Whether you’re a busy executive, student, or freelancer, the ChatGPT agent could become your new go-to assistant—capable of turning a long to-do list into a set of neatly formatted slides or data charts.
