Spotify Sees Boost in iOS Subscriptions Thanks to External Payment Links

Spotify recently shared encouraging news: allowing iOS users to pay for Premium subscriptions via external web links is already making a difference. This update came after a U.S. court ruling forced Apple to let developers direct customers to outside payment options within their apps — bypassing Apple’s usual commission fees.

What Changed for Spotify Users?

Spotify quickly updated its iOS app to include a “Premium Destination Page” that explains subscription pricing and provides a direct link to buy from Spotify’s website. They also added the ability to purchase audiobooks directly through this new system.

In just two weeks, Spotify noticed a clear jump in the number of iOS users upgrading from free accounts to Premium. On Android, where such options were already available, the upgrade rate stayed steady, showing the change is specific to iOS.

Why Is This a Big Deal?

For years, Apple’s App Store rules meant companies like Spotify had to rely on Apple’s payment system — which takes a hefty cut. The recent court order means iOS developers can now openly offer external payment options, saving money and opening doors to new business models and product ideas.

Spotify praised the change, saying it benefits both developers and consumers. They also hinted that audiobook sales are already increasing, just days after the new payment option went live.

The Legal Backdrop

This change follows a landmark legal battle between Epic Games and Apple, where Epic challenged Apple’s control over app payments. Apple is currently appealing the decision but has had to comply in the meantime. Spotify’s filing in support of Epic highlights how the ruling positively impacts innovation and consumer choice.

Meanwhile, Fortnite — Epic’s flagship game — recently returned to the App Store after a five-year absence due to the legal tussle.

What’s Next?

The case is ongoing in the appeals court, with Apple pushing to return to its old policies. However, the court has kept the current rules in place for now, meaning Spotify and other developers can continue offering external payment options on iOS.
