Strava, the popular social fitness app, is on an acquisition spree. After snapping up the runner-focused app Runna last month, Strava announced it has now acquired The Breakaway, a cycling app that uses AI to create personalized training plans.
The Breakaway, which launched out of Y Combinator’s Summer 2021 cohort, helps cyclists build training programs tailored to their goals. Runna works similarly, but targets runners instead of cyclists. With these purchases, Strava is clearly aiming to offer more robust, AI-powered training tools directly to its millions of users.
Strava is already a giant in the fitness app world. It lets users track workouts, map outdoor routes, and — most importantly — connect socially by sharing their activity with friends. The platform’s openness is one of its hallmarks, with a public API that hundreds of third-party apps use to enhance the Strava experience.

While Strava was impressed by the quality of Runna and The Breakaway, some athletes prefer to stick to their favorite training apps. Recognizing this, Strava has reassured users it won’t close off its API or force anyone to change their routine.
How these new apps will fit into Strava’s ecosystem isn’t fully clear yet. CEO Michael Martin confirmed Runna will continue to exist as a standalone app, and The Breakaway is expected to do the same for now.
Martin explained that the goal is to make the user experience smoother — imagine planning a route in Strava, training with Runna, then seamlessly sharing progress back to Strava. That “loop” is exactly where Strava wants to reduce friction.
Pricing for these premium services hasn’t changed, and there are no plans to alter subscription costs or remove free versions. Currently, Strava costs about $80 a year, Runna around $120, and The Breakaway about $70.
With these moves, Strava is building out a powerful toolkit for athletes who want more than just tracking — they want smarter, personalized training to help them reach their goals.
