Elon Musk has long been credited with transforming Tesla into a beacon of innovation, but his deepening ties to politics — particularly his alignment with President Trump — have cast a shadow over the automaker. As Musk takes an active role in federal matters, his image and actions are now directly impacting the Tesla brand.
Tesla’s first-quarter 2025 performance underscored this downturn. The company reported 336,681 deliveries, a steep drop from 495,570 in Q4 2024 and 386,810 in Q1 2024. Musk’s recent decisions, including mass layoffs and backing the elimination of federal programs through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), have further complicated public sentiment.
For many progressive consumers, Tesla has lost its appeal. Trade-ins have surged, European sales have declined, and the company’s stock has lost nearly half its value since December. Meanwhile, protests continue outside Tesla showrooms, dealerships, and charging stations, aiming to damage the brand and Musk’s personal wealth.
“They have a certain significant public image problem that’s really something we haven’t seen before in this industry,” said Sean Tucker, lead editor at Kelley Blue Book, in an interview with TechCrunch.
Even long-time Tesla optimist Dan Ives has voiced concern, urging Musk to redirect his focus to the company or risk a bleak future.
To counter negative press, Musk is emphasizing Tesla’s identity as an AI company, highlighting future prospects like autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots.

Key Moments Shaping Tesla’s Image

A sticker reading “I bought this before Elon went crazy” was spotted on a Tesla in Berlin on February 10, 2025. While Democrats are turning away from Tesla, Republicans are showing more interest. A joint study from Northeastern University, Columbia University, and University of Iowa found Republican interest in Tesla rose from 7% to 10.2% after Musk’s endorsement of Trump.
Trump reciprocated with a public endorsement of Tesla during a March 11 event at the White House, effectively offering the brand free publicity.
