Threads Is Catching Up to X’s Daily Users, New Data Shows

Instagram’s Threads is getting closer than ever to overtaking X (formerly Twitter) in daily mobile app usage, according to fresh figures from market intelligence firm Similarweb.

In June 2025, Threads’ iOS and Android apps reached 115.1 million daily active users — a massive 127.8% jump compared to last year. In contrast, X attracted 132 million daily actives but saw its own growth decline by 15.2% year-over-year.

Meanwhile, the decentralized social platform Bluesky is growing even faster in percentage terms, reporting an eye-popping 372.5% year-over-year increase. Still, its daily audience remains relatively modest: just 4.1 million daily active users worldwide as of June, per Similarweb’s estimates. (For context, Bluesky says it has over 37 million registered users altogether.)

Bluesky experienced a big wave of sign-ups late last year, when many people abandoned X in protest over Elon Musk’s close alliance with President Trump. However, that surge began to taper off earlier in 2025. More recently, Bluesky has faced criticism for becoming a largely left-leaning echo chamber, which may have nudged some users back toward Threads.

While Bluesky still holds promise in the long run thanks to its more open, configurable approach to social networking, the immediate race is clearly between Threads and X.

The latest mobile data suggests Threads is emerging as a serious challenger for X on iOS and Android — and could start to siphon off more advertising dollars, which so far remain Meta’s only way of monetizing Threads.

Similarweb reports that X saw an average of 145.8 million daily web visits worldwide in June, compared to just 6.9 million for Threads.

By comparison, Threads is only slightly ahead of Bluesky’s 5.3 million daily web visits.

In Bluesky’s case, the web traffic likely comes from casual visitors reading posts without necessarily downloading the app or sticking around. Threads, on the other hand, has always prioritized its mobile experience, launching there first and focusing its growth efforts accordingly.

Bluesky drew 2.4 million daily web visits from American users in June, notably higher than Threads’ 985,200. X remained the dominant player by far, with 33.1 million daily U.S. web visits.

On mobile, the contest in the U.S. is tighter. Threads logged 15.3 million daily active users on iOS and Android, not too far behind X’s 22.9 million. Bluesky’s mobile presence remained relatively small, with 1.1 million daily actives.

Over the long haul, Bluesky’s prospects may depend less on bursts of protest-driven sign-ups and more on whether it can build a sustainable open ecosystem that resonates with users. Those joining simply because it isn’t X may drift away if Bluesky doesn’t meet their needs quickly — potentially returning to X or switching to Threads instead.

Those attracted by Bluesky’s technology and vision, however, could be more likely to stick around and see what it evolves into over time.

For now, Meta reports that Threads has 350 million monthly active users, according to its most recent earnings update. X, as a private company, no longer publishes detailed user metrics. Last year, Elon Musk claimed X had reached 600 million monthly active users.
