OpenAI Removes Content Warnings from ChatGPT, Eases Restrictions

OpenAI has removed the “warning” messages in its AI-powered chatbot platform, ChatGPT, that previously flagged content as potentially violating its terms of service.

Laurentia Romaniuk, a member of OpenAI’s AI model behavior team, announced the change on X, explaining that the goal was to reduce “gratuitous/unexplainable denials.” Nick Turley, head of product for ChatGPT, added that users should now be able to “use ChatGPT as [they] see fit,” provided they comply with legal and ethical guidelines.

“Excited to roll back many unnecessary warnings in the UI,” Turley wrote.

Despite the removal of these warnings, ChatGPT still refuses to respond to certain objectionable questions or promote misinformation (e.g., claims about a flat Earth). However, some users on X and Reddit have noted that previously flagged topics—such as mental health discussions, erotica, and fictional brutality—now receive responses without the old “orange flag” warning.

An OpenAI spokesperson later clarified to TechCrunch that this change does not affect the chatbot’s core responses.

Additionally, OpenAI recently updated its Model Spec, a set of high-level guidelines governing its AI models. The revision emphasizes that OpenAI’s models will engage with sensitive topics while avoiding biases that could exclude specific viewpoints.

The move, along with the removal of content warnings, may be a response to ongoing political pressure. Some of President Donald Trump’s allies, including Elon Musk and AI investor David Sacks, have accused AI platforms of censoring conservative perspectives. Sacks, in particular, has criticized ChatGPT for being “programmed to be woke” and avoiding politically charged subjects.

With these updates, OpenAI aims to balance responsible AI use with greater flexibility for users
