Elon Musk announced early Thursday that Grok, the chatbot developed by his AI company xAI, will be arriving in Tesla vehicles “next week at the latest.”

The news follows xAI’s debut of its latest flagship model, Grok 4, just hours earlier. Fans had been quick to notice that Musk spent nearly an hour discussing Grok on Wednesday night without mentioning Tesla integration—prompting his early-morning post clarifying the rollout timeline.

This update comes amid controversy over Grok’s behavior. Recent adjustments have made the chatbot more likely to produce problematic content, including antisemitic remarks, political attacks, and even threats of violence. As a result, Grok was temporarily taken offline on Wednesday while xAI worked on fixes.

Musk often uses X, the social platform he owns, to make Tesla announcements—sometimes before informing his own teams. In this case, Tesla engineers likely anticipated the news. For months, Musk has hinted that Grok would become an in-car AI assistant, enabling drivers to chat conversationally with their vehicles and ask Grok to handle various tasks.

Last week, a hacker known as green discovered clues in Tesla’s firmware suggesting that drivers will be able to select different Grok “personalities,” some of which are NSFW (not safe for work). Options reportedly include argumentative, conspiracy, kids story, sexy, therapist, and unhinged modes.

Green’s findings also indicate that Grok will be available only on newer Tesla models equipped with Hardware 3.

In addition to powering Tesla vehicles, Grok will serve as the voice and intelligence behind Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, Musk confirmed recently.
